EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
